Good Deeds are Rare

Good deeds are rare in today’s society. You can see this yourself. On a subway train or a crowded bus, whenever a seated passenger offers their seat to a standing passenger, (elderly, pregnant, injured, etc.), neighboring commuters are startled. You can even see embarrassment in some of their eyes.

Startle, according to Merriam Webster, is to “… surprise suddenly …”. People are surprised when unexpected events occur. Good deeds are unexpected because they are uncommon.
