December 2 1984, one of the world’s worst industrial disasters occurred in Bhopal Madhya Pradesh, India. It was a gas leak at the Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant. Approximately 25,000 people died due to the gas leak and over 500,000 people have sustained injuries in the neighbouring shantytowns. Gas related diseases, including cancers, are prominent even today.
The ordeal for the victims is not over. The government opened Bhopal Memorial Hospital for the victims to receive free treatment. However, the doctors are using the victims’ illiteracy against them by having them sign consent forms to participate in drug trials for foreign drug companies.
These drugs are so expensive that most Indians will never be able to afford them, yet they are involuntary participants in the drug testing. They are guinea pigs. The drug companies have invested so much money in Indian hospitals that the doctors and the government have become corrupt. Money is their God.
